TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION:
A passport is required for travel to Britain. It must be valid at the time you return to the U.S., preferably for at least six months.
We suggest that you bring an extra copy of your passport with you just in case it is lost or damaged.

FITNESS:
This painting workshop will involve a considerable amount of walking and stair climbing in the regions visited, and it is important that all participants have a level of fitness that allows them to take part in this activity without the need for assistance from others. We recommend that you have some sort of bag on wheels to transport your painting equipment and luggage.

LUGGAGE:
Space for luggage is restricted. Please only bring what you can safely manage by yourself. We recommend one medium suitcase (about 36" long) and your painting equipment. Please do not expect others to help you.
Please Do Not ship articles, you will be charged tax.

CLOTHING & CLIMATE:
Temperatures in England in June range approximately from 52f at night to 74f during the day. Rain is definitely possible, so be prepared. Bring wet-weather clothing, an umbrella, and wear layers as the temperatures may fluctuate during the day. Try to limit yourself to three casual / painting outfits and one dressy / smart one.

CURRENCY
British pounds sterling is the currency in England, not the Euro.
We recommend that you bring travelers checks in British pounds and some local currency.
ATM's are available in England and your ATM card will generally be accepted.
Click here to see the currency and dominations in use or go to http://web.dcs.bbk.ac.uk/~phild/currency.html. Please note this link is a bit temperamental and not always available.
Credit cards: Visa and Mastercard are accepted by the majority of businesses, American Express is not always accepted.

MEDICATION:
If you are taking medication on a regular basis, please make sure that you bring it with you, as there is no guarantee that it will be available in England.

SUGGESTED TRAVEL SUPPLY LIST FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS

This workshop will be an innovative and challenging approach to oil and gouache. Other mediums maybe used, but the demo's will be in oil and gouache. Our aim is to assist and guide you into accomplishing a rich and harmonious painting that will be a tribute to both plein air painting and an active interpretation of the landscape.

Please bring the following regardless of chosen medium(s).
1) Small sketchbook (12" x 9" or smaller) plus 4B graphite or lead pencil.
2) Photos of landscapes; in case of bad weather, we will have a number from which to choose from too.

Turpentine is not permitted on the aircraft, so we will be stopping at a store on Day One for you to buy any necessary equipment or supplies.
We recommend that if you have a particular favorite piece of equipment or paint, you bring it with you, as not all the supplies with which you may be familiar are available in England.

Oils:

Palette
Either wood, or disposable palette: Plastic palette is not suitable for oils
The traditional artist's palette, used with oils is a flattened orb with an easy-to-clean surface. Rectangular shapes are also popular.
A covered palette keeps paint moist and workable between sessions and prevents paint from getting on your clothes.

Oils
Cadmium yellow, Cadmium yellow lemon, yellow oxide or yellow ochre, Cadmium red light and dark, alizarin crimson or naptholite crimson, ultramarine blue, thalo blue, cobalt blue, cerulean blue, ivory black,
Earth colors Burnt sienna, burnt umber, raw sienna, raw umber,
Small jar medium such as linseed oil or stand oil.

Turpentine can not be brought on board the airplane, we will stop at an art supply store for this on the First Day.

Canvas, boards, panels
Wooden panels or masonite. (All should be primed with acrylic gesso, or oil based primer), Gesso board. Sizes 8" x 10", 10" x 12" or 9" x 12" or similar.
We recommend the following brand: Source Tek canvas and linen panels available at http://www.canvaspanels.com

Easel etc:
Any lightweight or portable easel.
Art Work Essentials makes a small lightweight easel call 'Easyl' and comes with a tripod (http://www.artworkessentials.com/products/easyl). Small folding stool hat and Umbrella optional.
Randall recommends the Soltek easel.

Other
Wet panel carrier. Rags or Paper towels.

Brushes - Oil
For 'aggressive' oil painting, bristle brushes. Synthetic brushes can be used.
Numbers 4, 8 and 12 Flats and/or Filberts and Number 4 round.

For beginners in Oil we suggest the Beginners Painting Kit #993006. Available form the Richeson catalogue.

Gouache
Gouache is an opaque watercolor paint. Whereas transparent watercolors allow you to see the "white" of the paper below the paint, gouache can be applied in solid colors. This allows an artist to paint in layers from dark to light. Gouache dries to a matte finish.

(Info taken from Dick Blick Art Materials web site: http://www.dickblick.com/categories/gouache)

Paints: If you can afford bring TWO (2) small Tubes of gouache (in case you run out or it gets lost)
White, lemon yellow, cadmium yellow light or aureolin, cadmium yellow medium or gamboge, alizarin crimson, cadmium red light or vermilion, sap green, cobalt blue, thalo blue, ultramarine blue, Hookers green.

Palette: wood or any plastic tray 9" x 12".
The watercolor palette, also useful for acrylics and other water-based media, is typically a rectangular or round dish with wells or indentations for mixing paint.

Water container:
Spritzer and small tupperware pot or jar for water.

Clamps Four (in case two get lost) to hold paper down
#2 graphite pencil
Knife or single edge razor blade or pencil sharpener

Paper
Thick archival colored 'memory' pad. These pads are usually used for scrap books. This paper is thick, acid free and dries flat.

Brushes: Large 1" thick brush called a skyscraper by Robert Simmons.
#14 and #10 round white sables

Easel etc: Lightweight easel.
Small folding stool, umbrella and hat optional.

Pastel

If working with pastel, we suggest you bring the following;

Paper: Pastel Pad or loose sheets
Your favorite paper or Art Spectrum Pastel Paper, Wallis, Colorfix, Water Color paper, La Carte, Glassine or shiny white foam core board to put between the sheets of finished artwork.

Board
Lightweight or Foam core board to work on (small size)

Masking tape - drafting tape is best as it lifts off the surface without damaging the paper.

Pastels: Bring a variety of hard and soft and carry them with your hand luggage or protect them extremely well in your luggage or you may end up with a thousand pastels instead of 20!
Bring a good range of color, you may need everything from the saturated to subtle because the weather may vary. Bring a combination of hard and soft pastels such as Nu-Pastel or Cretacolor (both hard). Soft Pastels include:
Unison, Diane Townsend, Terry Ludwig, Daler-Rowney, Sennelier, Girault, or your favorite brand.
Try to get the smaller sticks of Sennelier, and pack very carefully, as these are very soft, delicate pastels.
