For the last three days of our tour (Days 6, 7, 8 )we shall be in the Cotswolds, approximately 100 miles from north of London. The Cotswolds area is famed for its rolling hills, villages and magnificent 'Stately homes' of which we will be visiting two; Blenheim Palace and Sudeley Castle. We shall also spending time in some of the prettiest villages where you will have the opportunity paint, and explore an array of galleries and antique shops.

Nestling quietly in the famous Cotswold hills and surrounded by some of Gloucestershire's most beautiful countryside is the historic wool town of Painswick, where we shall be staying for tis part of the tour. Built of mellow Cotswold stone from the local quarry, the town is known as the 'Queen of the Cotswolds' because of its many beautiful buildings and winding narrow streets overlooking the surrounding countryside.


The churchyard of St. Mary's with its 99 yew trees, legend has it that the 100th won't grow.

The church of St. Mary dates from Norman times, it was extended around 1480 in the English perpendicular style.

.. The Falcon Inn, Painswick, Gloustershire

We will be staying here for three nights as part of our Cotswolds tour.

From its beginnings in1554 The Falcon Inn has served as a courthouse, a public house and as the court of a Baron. Now it is rated as a 3 Crown Commended hotel by the English Tourist Board.

There is excellent modern en suite accommodation on the second floor (known as the first in England). The rooms are family sized and fully equipped with remote control color TV, tea and coffee making facilities, hair dryers, radios, alarm clocks etc. The comfort and warmth of the Falcon is complemented by fresh food of superb quality and variety. The restaurant is renowned for offering "good hearty fare".

.. Painswick Rococo Gardens, Painswick, Gloustershire
The garden is a fascinating step back to the flamboyant English Rococo period. This gem of a garden, which was originally laid out in the 18th century, is set in a hidden Cotswold valley with magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.
The buildings and grounds have been extensively restored during the past few years and will look outstanding during blooming June.

.. Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
Extensive 'Capability' Brown (same designer as Kew Gardens) landscaped park, comprising some 2,100 acres.
The grounds include lakes, spanned by stone bridges, rolling hills, woodland, follies, the Marlborough Maze - the worlds largest hedge maze, and the magnificent Blenheim palace. In 1987, Blenheim was placed on the international list as a World Heritage Site., the house also has a superb art collection.

This magnificent palace was built from 1705-1722 as the gift of the grateful nation to reward John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his great victory over the army of Louis XIV at the Battle of Blenheim in Bavaria (1704). Today, Blenheim's most famous resident was Sir Winston Churchill who was born here in 1874. His grave is located a mile or so away in a modest graveyard located on the outskirts of the grounds in the small town of Woodstock.

.. Sudeley Castle, Oxfordshire
Sudeley is set against the beautiful backdrop of the Cotswold Hills, and is steeped in history with royal connections spanning a thousand years.

The grounds have a wide variety of scenes to paint, including ruins, a church, a castle, an Elizabethan garden complete with topiary, and magnificent views over the surrounding rolling Cotswolds hills.
